Some of the most game changing anime films to ever be created are on this list. If you have yet to see them, you have some catching up to do.
1. Akira (1988)
Of course Akira is on this list, it just has to be. It is the grandfather of anime movies and influenced not only other anime films, but a mess of Hollywood movies after. Directed by Katsuhiro Ohtomo, it still remains one of the greatest anime films of all time.
2. Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Forget about the Scarlett Johansson remake, this one is the one you should watch. Directed by Mamoru Oshii, it is a classic. It has given inspiration for The Matrix and other futuristic movies out there. But no one has made another movie half as good as this one. It was a game changer.
3. Paprika (2006)
Satoshi Kon is a master storyteller, and it certainly shows in Paprika. Sit back and enjoy the changes in camera angles, the transitions you only thought you could see in Christopher Nolan’s Inception. It is confusing, compelling and creative.
4. Nauusicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
Hayao Miyazaki, the father of Studio Ghibli began his journey with a few humble movies, this being one of them. How great and overlooked this movie has become!
5. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Usually we would say anything Studio Ghibli is absolutely incredible, however a couple stand about all the rest. Grave of the Fireflies is such one. Directed by Isao Takahata and based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s autobiographic novel (somewhat) it is a movie about two siblings trying to survive WW2.
6. Wings of Honneamise (1987)
Directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga, this movie is to anime, as Star wars is to film. The space drama is about an unmotivated astronaut, and includes some of the greatest visuals of that time.
